Swim coach sure of largest ever
Olympic squad for Sydney
Hong Kong Standard 5th September,1999

NATIONAL swimming coach Chan Yiu-hoi expects to send his largest ever squad to next year's Sydney Olympic games.
Speaking at yesterday's National Championships at the Shing Mun Swimming Complex--- where Hong Kong's best were attempting to qualify for Sydney--- Chan was upbeat on the SAR's chances pf sending an enhanced squad.
"We still have a long way to go but I am optimistic...I estimate the (final) figure to be seven or eight," Chan said.
Hong Kong sent three swimmers to the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games ---Arthur Li, Snowie Pang and Mark Kin-ming.
At the end of yesterday's racing two swimmers--- Alex Fong Lik-sun, and another male, Fu Wing--- had met FINA and International Olympic committee B-Standard times to ensure Olympic squad places.
They join already qualified ( under the B-Saandard) female swimmers Sherry tsai Hiu-wai and Flora Kong Yan-kay and male Tam chi-kin who qualified at the Pan Pacific games and the Asian Pacific Championships...
Fong easily won his 200 meters backstroke event in a time of two mintues 09.05 seconds.
With three other events--- the China City Games, trials for the Pusan Asian Championships, and the Asianchampionships--- designated as Olympic qualifiers by the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Associaton, Chan expects more qualifiers .
Chan felt new blood coming through the system would, in part, account for the projeted increase. The versatile mark kwok is still studying in America and Chan said he would have to prove himself at trials for April's Pusan Asian Cahmpionships.
kwok holds Hong Kong records at 200 metres, 400m, 800m, and 1,500m freestyle, the 200m butterfly, 200m and 400m individual medly and as part of the 4 x 200m freestyle relay team.
