SCMP Young Post 27th February,98

Student swimmer Alex Fong Lik-sun is now aiming at the next Asia Games

Alex Fong Lik-sun broke the Hong Kong 200 metres backstroke record twice in one day at the Epson Swimming World Cup.

The Form Six St. Joseph's student first broke Mark Kowk Kin-ming's old mark of 2'05"13 in his morning heat with a time of 2'04"85.

He then showed his outstanding form by breaking the record again in the final held later in the day.

Despite finishing fifth, Alex still set a new time of 2'03"85.

Alex was delighted that he had managed to slice almost four seconds from his previous best in the event.

" I really just couldn't believe it ......it was just unbelievable.Although I always feel confident, I never expected to make such a big improvement.I will never forget this,"said Alex, who just turned 18.

Although United States based Mark Kwok has been Hong Kong's leading swimmer in the medley events, Alex showed good form. In the 200m medley, Alex impoved hispersonal best to 2'09"66 and it could be only a matter of time before he beats Mark's national record of 2'05"24.

" I still have a long way to go but I'm sure if I train hard I can keep improving," he said.

Alex is competing in the third leg of the World Cup in Beijing this weekend, but his main target is December's Asian Games in Thailand.
